Karen Kay:
Karen Kay started Access Acceleration during the summer of 2002. Acceleration began by conducting SPEED Training Camps at several locations throughout the Seacoast Region. In February of 2005, Acceleration moved to its current location in the Seacoast Athletic Center and began to expand its services to include weight training, Speed, Agility, and Quickness training, Plyometric Training, Sport Specific Conditioning Programs, Back Care and Injury Management Programs, as well as, general fitness programs and personal training.

Karen has combined her experiences as a former Division I Athlete, a former Division I Coach, a former United States National Team Coach, and a former Certified Athletic Trainer to form Acceleration and to help athletes of all ages achieve their athletic goals and to recover from injuries.

In 2001, Kay became only the sixth women’s ice hockey coach to reach the 200-victory plateau. Upon leaving the coaching profession in 2002, she had a career record of 215 wins, 90 losses, and 25 ties. This record at the University of New Hampshire includes a National Championship in 1998 and National Runner-Up in 1999. In the year 2000, Coach Kay was part of a 6 member NCAA committee that established an NCAA Championship Tournament for women’s ice hockey. That same summer, she was named to coach one of four teams at the Olympic Ice Hockey Festival and was on the selection committee for the United States Olympic Team.

In 1997-98, Kay led the Wildcats to a banner year as they recorded a school-record 31 wins en route to the inaugural AWCHA National Championship. New Hampshire defeated Brown University 4-1 at the Fleet Center in Boston, MA. The team broke 15 school records during the season and captured the ECAC regular-season championship. Kay witnessed UNH co-caption Brandy Fisher win the inaugural Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award as the top women’s collegiate player in the nation. Kay herself was the runner-up for the American Hockey Coaches Association National Coach of the Year.

In addition to her duties at UNH, Kay was also named head coach of the United States National Team in January of 1993. She led Team USA to a silver medal finish in the 1995 Pacific Rim Tournament in San Jose, CA. In 1994, Kay and Team USA collected a silver medal at the Women’s World Ice Hockey Championships. In 1993, Kay led Team USA to wins over Team Canada at the first-ever North American Challenge and the US Olympic Festival in San Antonio, Texas. In 1990, Kay served as an assistant coach for the first-ever United States National Team that earned a silver medal at the inaugural Women’s World Ice Hockey Championship.

In 1994, Kay was named the 1994 recipient of USA Hockey’s prestigious Bob Johnson Medallion for her contributions to International Ice Hockey. The 1998 Olympic Team included four of her former UNH players; the 2002 Olympic Team included 3 of her former UNH players; and the 2006 Olympic Team included 1 of her former UNH players.

Coach Kay began her coaching career with Assabet Valley Girls Hockey in 1984 and led seven teams to US National Championships at three different age levels. While at Assabet, Kay also served on the Women’s Ice Hockey Committee for the state of Massachusetts. She was also head coach of the AHACM Midget Select Travel Team that represented the team in international competition.

Kay has also coached the 1992 and 1994 USA Hockey 17 and Under Olympic Development Camps and the 1993 18 and Over Olympic Development Camps. She was the program director for the Europa Cup at Babson College. In addition, Kay has been an instructor at the Quistgard Goalie Training Camps; the Babson Boys & Girls Hockey Camps; the Blue Hills Hockey Camps; and started the UNH “Break the Ice” Girls Hockey Camps. She has traveled to all parts of the United States and Europe as a guest coach and speaker for several hockey-training programs.

Karen Kay is a 1985 graduate of Providence College with a BS degree in Business and Psychology. Karen also completed her athletic training curriculum during this time and was NATA certified in 1985. She is a Master’s Level Coach through USA Hockey. Following graduation, Karen served as an athletic trainer at Providence College and then Framingham State College. She then moved on to a similar role in a private physical therapy practice in Massachusetts.

In 1989, Karen accepted a medical sales position with Medtronic, Inc. Medtronic is the inventor of the pacemaker and a Fortune 500 Company. However, in 1992 she followed her dream of becoming a Division I coach and accepted the coaching position at the University of New Hampshire and with the United States National Team.

Coach Kay is currently a certified advanced level personal trainer, strength and conditioning coach, and a certified weight-training specialist.


Mike Thompson, ATCMichael Thompson, ATC
Mike Thompson, ATC is one of the leading strength and conditioning specialists in the Seacoast Area. Mike uses a unique modern hybrid approach when it comes to conditioning by incorporating speed, agility, plyometrics, Olympic weight lifting, kettlebells, and traditional strength training, and into his own customized training system. Mike has served more than 12 years in the military in the Army and Air Force giving him an unparalleled understanding of what it takes to truly develop a program that will effectively focus on increasing athletic performance. In addition to this he is a former Division 1 baseball player for the University of Maine before finishing his Sports Medicine Degree at the University of Southern Maine majoring in Athletic Training. Mike is a NATA BOC Certified Athletic Trainer which has given him an in-depth understanding of the human body when it pertains to Biomechanics and injury related issues.

Lauren Bruce, ATCLauren Bruce, ATC
Lauren Bruce, ATC, graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training in May of 2011. She is a National Athletic Training Association BOC Certified Athletic Trainer.  Lauren specializes in injury management fitness and strength and conditioning.  She is currently teaching a Beginner Strength and Conditioning class at Access Acceleration and serves as the on-field Athletic Trainer for several Seacoast area high schools.


Kelli Shapleigh, ATC:
Kelli graduated from Plymouth State University in May of 2006 with her Bachelors of Science degree in Athletic Training. While at Plymouth State Kelli was a member of the women’s varsity soccer team. Before arriving at Access Sports Medicine, Kelli was the Head Athletic Trainer at a Division III college and worked with soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, baseball, and lacrosse. Kelli is currently working in Access Acceleration, a subdivision of Access Sports Medicine, doing injury management fitness and strength and conditioning training, as well as covering games for local high school contracts.
